UAE Ensures No Unjustifiable Price Hikes on Basic Food Products Ahead of Ramadan
In a move to protect consumers, the UAE government has announced that no unjustifiable price hikes will be allowed on nine essential food items during Ramadan.
Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE’s Minister of Economy, emphasized the importance of this policy during a recent inspection of major retail outlets, including Union Coop and Lulu.
The nine items affected by this regulation are cooking oil, eggs, dairy products, rice, sugar, poultry, legumes, bread, and wheat. Retailers are required to display prices clearly and must obtain prior approval for any price increases.
The Ministry of Economy has stated that there must be at least six months between consecutive price hikes for these basic commodities.
As Ramadan approaches, a time known for increased consumer spending, the ministry aims to ensure fair pricing and enhance competition in the market. Al Marri’s inspections included gathering feedback from shoppers regarding price stability, reinforcing the collaborative role of consumers in monitoring prices.
This initiative aligns with the ministry’s broader strategy to maintain market oversight and support high-quality standards for goods and services in the UAE.
