All You Need to Know About Saudi Arabia’s Haramain High-Speed Rail (HHR)

The Haramain High-Speed Railway is one of Saudi Arabia’s fastest and most efficient modes of transport, connecting the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah via Jeddah.
Widely used by Umrah pilgrims and Hajj travellers, the railway has transformed intercity travel by significantly reducing journey times compared to road transport.

Route, Distance, and Speed
Spanning around 450 kilometres, the Haramain High-Speed Rail links the Two Holy Mosques through key stops in Jeddah, King Abdulaziz International Airport, and King Abdullah Economic City.
The electric trains operate at speeds of up to 300 km/h, offering a smooth and time-efficient travel experience for millions of passengers each year.
Train Capacity and Seating Layout
Each train consists of 417 seats, divided into two classes:
- 113 seats in Business Class
- 304 seats in Economy Class
A dedicated dining area is located in the fifth coach, allowing passengers to purchase food and beverages throughout the journey.

Haramain High-Speed Rail Stations
The railway serves five major stations, each designed with a blend of Islamic architectural elements and modern passenger facilities.
Makkah Station
Located around 3.5 km from Masjid Al-Haram, the station’s design reflects the Kiswa of the Holy Kaaba. Services are tailored to accommodate large numbers of pilgrims, particularly during peak seasons.
Al-Sulimaniyah (Jeddah) Station
This station serves as a major transport hub in Jeddah, approximately 20 km from King Abdulaziz International Airport, linking the city to the wider Haramain network.

Jeddah Airport Station
Situated inside King Abdulaziz International Airport, the station allows seamless transfers between flights and high-speed rail. It is designed to handle heavy passenger volumes during Hajj and Ramadan.
King Abdullah Economic City Station
Serving KAEC and nearby areas, this station supports both business travellers and tourists, with proximity to King Abdullah Port and industrial zones.
Madinah Station
Located near the city centre, the Madinah station features design elements inspired by the Prophet’s Mosque, combining calm aesthetics with high-capacity passenger handling.

Onboard Experience
Business Class
Business Class offers spacious seating with extra legroom, adjustable seats, foldable tables, armrests, and headrests. Two seats are allocated for passengers with special needs, and all seating is pre-assigned.
Economy Class
Economy Class provides affordable, comfortable travel with foldable tables, armrests, headrests, and allocated seating, making it suitable for families and pilgrims.
Cafeteria
The onboard cafeteria, located in the fifth coach, offers a range of food and beverage options available from boarding until arrival.

Station Facilities and Services
All HHR stations feature large waiting halls, retail outlets, restaurants, cafés, prayer rooms, parking areas, taxi stands, car rental services, luggage trolleys, and wheelchair access.
Shuttle buses operate from Makkah and Madinah stations to key city locations, while shelter buses serve KAEC. Ticket offices, self-service machines, and information desks are available at every station.
Baggage Allowance
Passengers are allowed:
- One large bag up to 25 kg (65 × 55 × 35 cm)
- One small personal item such as a backpack or laptop bag
Overhead shelves and luggage racks are provided onboard, and all baggage undergoes security screening before boarding.

Discounts for Children and Passengers With Special Needs
- Children (Economy): 50% discount
- Children (Business): 40% discount
- Infants sharing a seat with an adult: 90% discount (one infant per adult)
- Additional infants with their own seat: same child discounts
- Passengers with special needs: 50% discount with valid ID

Fares vary by route and class. For example:
- Jeddah Airport to Makkah: SAR 34 (Economy), SAR 78 (Business)
