Using Private Vehicles as Taxis Violates Traffic Laws in Qatar, Ministry of Interior Warns

According to the MOI, individuals offering taxi services with their private cars are committing an illegal practice that undermines the regulation of public transport services.

The ministry clarified that taxis and other passenger transport vehicles must be operated only by licensed service providers that comply with the relevant regulations governing commercial passenger transportation in the State of Qatar.

The warning highlighted that private cars are not permitted to function as taxis, whether passengers are charged a fare directly or through digital platforms.

This includes situations where drivers may use mobile applications or informal arrangements to accept passengers in exchange for payment. Engaging in such activities exposes drivers to penalties, which may include fines and other legal measures under Qatari law.

The MOI urged all residents and drivers to adhere strictly to traffic and licensing requirements. It encouraged the public to rely solely on authorised taxi services and ride-hailing platforms licensed by the relevant authorities when arranging passenger transport.

Authorities also pointed out that using official services ensures compliance with safety standards and legal protections for both drivers and passengers.

The advisory serves as part of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to maintain road safety, regulate transport services, and uphold the integrity of Qatar’s traffic system.

By raising awareness about illegal taxi operations, the MOI aims to protect the public and ensure that transportation services operate within the established legal and regulatory framework.

Members of the public are reminded that any inquiries regarding traffic regulations and transport licensing can be directed to the Ministry of Interior’s customer service channels.

Drivers and commuters are encouraged to stay informed about legal requirements and to report any suspected violations to the appropriate authorities.
