The Last Quarter Moon and Its Significance

On Sunday, the last quarter moon of Shaban was visible across the Kingdom, with half of the moon illuminated and the other half remaining in shadow. This marks roughly three-quarters of the moon’s orbit around the Earth.

The last quarter moon is a fascinating sight for amateur astronomers and astrophotographers, as the ideal angle reveals surface features like craters, volcanic plains, and mountains, with shadows along the terminator enhancing their details.

Transition to Ramadan

Jeddah Astronomy Society Director Majed Abu Zahra explained that the last quarter moon marks a transitional phase. Its visible light gradually fades, becoming a waning crescent before sunrise. The new moon on February 17 will signal the sighting of Ramadan’s crescent, officially ushering in the holy month.
